MOTÖRHEAD BECOMES PETRÖLHEAD 15.04.2009 Rally, Music, Motoring News
That's right, rock n roll's high priest Lemmy will be gracing this year's Gumball with his hallowed presence when he hooks up with Gumball favourites and former tour buddies, the Fuel Girls. The legendary Motörhead front-man will be hitching a ride with the Fuel Girls, Gumball’s preferred kick-ass, ultra-sexy, fire-breathing rock n roll, dance and stunt show, who will be crossing the continent in a hand-painted 1960 Cadillac SeVille and a high-lifted H2 SUT Hummer.
Christened Ian Fraser Kilmister, the sandpaper-voiced singer allegedly inherited the Lemmy moniker at school after repeatedly demanding ‘Lemmy a quid ‘til Friday’ to fuel his fruit machine addiction.
Lemmy learned his rock n roll chops from some of the greatest names in the business. At 16 he saw The Beatles play the Cavern Club, admiring John Lennon’s sarcasm as much as his fretwork, and later worked as a roadie for The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
After getting the boot from space rock pioneers Hawkwind in 1975, Lemmy formed a new band called Bastard. Convinced that a band with such a name would never get on Top of the Pops, Lemmy's then manager convinced him to change the band’s name which he duly did to Motörhead – the title of the last song he wrote for Hawkwind.
Motörhead first met the Fuel Girls when the Grammy winning band invited the scantily glad dance troupe to appear on their 2009 tour in support of their latest album, 'Motörizer'.
We’re sure Lemmy will be sharing some of his road-worn wisdom with us during the rally but in the meantime here’s a couple of our favourite quotes from the godfather of heavy metal…
"That was a great time, the summer of '71 - I can't remember it, but I'll never forget it!"
"If this band moved in next door to you, your lawn would die."
"I don't need Channel 4 to tell me how rock and roll I am; I'm in fucking Motörhead!" (after taking Channel 4's 'How Rock And Roll Are You?').
Marvel at the majesty of Motörhead when they appeared on 'The Young Ones' in 1984...
The Fuel Girls will be driving the rally in aid of the Wounded Warrior Project and will be performing at the Stars and Stripes event at the Playboy Mansion the weekend after the Gumball in support of the charity.
